World Cup 2010

World Cup 2010 ArrivesWe previewed some of the World Cup 2010 betting opportunities in our preview item just under a month ago, but with the first match of the World Cup tournament literally hours away (the first match kicks off at 3pm UK time this Friday 11 June) we think it makes sense to look at some of the new sports betting markets that have opened up since. We will also note how the odds for the Tournament Winner have shifted in light of recent warm-up and friendly matches that have been played.

Using the William Hill sportsbook as our reference, we can tell you that the Tournament Winner market is in similar shape to last month, with Spain and Brazil established as firm first and second favourites at 4/1 and 9/2 respectively. Argentina are now third favourites at odds of 13/2 because England have slipped from third to fourth favouritism and our home team can now be backed at around 8/1. England fans can therefore get better value than they could previously, but when you consider their fairly lacklustre performance against Japan the other week that’s possibly just as well.

The first England match against the USA this Friday is another football betting market that many readers will be interested in, and here you can obtain odds of 1/2 for England, 3/1 for the draw and 6/1 for the USA. Whilst it would be a mistake to underestimate the USA or any other team in a World Cup, 1/2 does look quite good value for an opening England victory, so if you agree you might want to help yourself whilst you can.

England to win Group C is sure to be another popular World Cup 2010 betting market, and the odds for that happening are currently 3/10 at William Hill. Those who fancy opposing England in this market can bet on the USA, Slovenia or Algeria at odds of 9/2, 10/1 and 16/1 respectively. If you would prefer to back any of these teams for Group Qualification only then the odds are England 1/20, USA 4/6, Slovenia 7/4 and Algeria 10/3. We would rather have England to win the group outright at 3/10, but if you are the kind of bettor who likes to “buy money” by betting on extreme odds-on shots the 1/20 might be of interest.

The most optimistic England fans can also bet on the team winning all of their games in the Group stage, and if you count yourself among that particular set of people you can obtain odds of 15/8. It’s certainly a possibility for England to win all of their matches if they play at their best, so we wouldn’t put anyone off this bet. However, we would probably view it as a ‘bonus’ bet rather than a main ‘bread and butter’ betting proposition.

Visit the William Hill sportsbook to take a look at the many other betting markets that are available for this eagerly awaited tournament, then sit back and cheer on your favourite team. Good luck!
