Victor Chandler Chase
Eight runners will go to post when the 25th Anniversary of The Victor Chandler Chase gets underway from Ascot on Saturday. The race is seen as the final indicator for the Queens Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival so it’s not surprising to see another top class field entered. The Nicky Henderson horse Finian’s Rainbow currently heads the Victor Chandler Chase betting but he’ll face some tough opposition in landing this 2 miles and one furlong contest especially from the Paul Nicholls runner Al Ferof.
Finian’s Rainbow was last seen out when landing the Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton in December 2011 and with a fine record of five wins from six races over fences, the 2/1 quoted by the race sponsors BetVictor looks a fair price. The only real concern though for anybody wishing to back the nine-year-old is that his jumping could be his downfall after he nearly blew his chances in the Desert Orchid Chase with a very bad blunder four out. Saying that, Henderson has won this race on three occasions so he certainly knows what is required to land a Grade One race like this and with a big run expected the 11/2 for the bay gelding to land the Queen Mother at Cheltenham in March could also be worth a small investment.
Al Ferof represents the Paul Nicholls stable and with the trainer having trained the last three winners of the Victor Chandler Chase, the grey must be respected. He’s currently quoted at 11/4 with BetVictor to land the spoils and having won back-to-back victories over the larger obstacles already this season, the 11/4 quoted looks a fair price. The seven-year-old is better known for his performances over hurdles having won the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham last year, but with an entry for Arkle Chase at Cheltenham in March (7/1 for the Arkle) it shows how much Paul Nicholls think of his horse. The real concern is that Al Ferof is really stepping up in class so it will be interesting to see if his lack of experience will tell.
Somersby is next in the Victor Chandler Chase betting at 11/2 and having pushed Master Minded all the way in this race in 2011, the Henrietta Knight’s charge must be respected. He has a good record around Ascot and a repeat of last year’s performance could be enough to see the horse finish in the places at worse. The one thing this horse will need is a strong gallop and with a host of speedy types in the race, he shouldn’t have any trouble with that. He ran a great race when finishing second behind Sizing Europe in the 2010 Arkle at Cheltenham off a strong gallop and then repeated that performance in this race last year when also running off a strong gallop.
Next comes the Philips Hobbs horse Wishfull Thinking. The nine-year-old is currently 6/1 in the Victor Chandler Chase betting and if he can build on his encouraging run in the Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton, where he finished second to Finian’s Rainbow, the chestnut gelding will be fancied to go very close.
Gauvain will definitely have his supports after a great run in the Peterborough Chase. He’s currently 9/1 to land the Victor Chandler Chase and having already won two from three this season he could be the one for each-way backers. He comes from the in-form yard of Nick Williams and with no doubts over the trip or ground, another big run is expected.
From the other three runners entered in the Victor Chandler Chase betting, 2009 Arkle winner Forpadydeplaster is 12/1 to bring an end to his winless run (11 races) whilst Oiseau De Nuit, who finished behind both Finian’s Rainbow and Wishfull Thinking, is 40/1 along with the David Pipe runner I’m So Lucky.
VC Spokesperson Charlie McCann: Given our offer of money back as a free bet irrespective of whether your horse wins or loses we have seen a wide spread of money with only the two outsiders Oiseau De Nuit and I’m So Lucky friendless. We have pushed out Finian’s Rainbow to 2/1 this morning despite reports that he had schooled brilliantly for big race jockey Barry Geraghty, who has never ridden the winner of the race, on the gallops yesterday.”
