Phil Taylor 8/11 for World Grand Prix title
Phil Taylor is 8/11 to claim his tenth World Grand Prix title after he overcame the flamboyant Peter Wright 2-1 in the first round of the Dublin showpiece. Going into the match it did look from the betting that Taylor would cruise into the second round (Wright 7/1) but the 42-year old from Lowestoft produced some of his finest darts to date to give the world number one a real scare. Taylor now faces Paul Nicholson in the last 16 stage after the world number nine overcame Ronnie Baxter in his opening match. It’s 1/5 for the Power to win with Nicholson 10/3 (Bet365).
Defending champion James Wade is the 13/2 (Ladbrokes) second favourite to take the World Grand Prix title after he beat Steve Brown 2-0 in his opening match on Monday. The 28-year-old faces Dutchman Vincent van der Voort this evening in his second round match and after only dropping one leg in his opening match, Wade will be confident of progressing. It’s 1/3 (Victor Chandler) for Wade to continue with his defence of his crown with van der Voort 5/2 (William Hill).
From the other top 16 players that are still involved in World Grand Prix outright betting, Wes Newton is 10/1 to claim his first Grand Prix title, Raymond van Barneveld is 12/1 (bwin), Simon Whitlock is 14/1 (Betfred) and Paul Nicholson is 29/1 (unibet).
Wednesday’s Second Round Matches
The World Grand Prix continues this evening with four second round matches and Stan James are offering 2/1 for all four favourites to win their respective matches (Newton, Wade, Barneveld and Part). At first the 2/1 may seem a little skinny but when you compare that to the prices made up from the other bookmakers, the 2/1 is actually giving you some value.
The only negative with backing all four favourites is that there are a couple of tough matches this evening that could throw up a surprise. The first being John Part (1/3) v Brendan Dolan (11/4). Yes, Part overcame the current world champion Adrian Lewis in his opening match but if you look back and watch Dolan’s opening match against Wayne Jones, where the Irishman won 2-0 with a three dart average of 90.11, you will soon realise that the 38-year-old could be a value bet at 11/4. The other positive Dolan has is home advantage. Some may argue that this should not come into consideration but with the lights beaming down, the TV cameras watching your every move and the best part of 2000+ people cheering against you, it can make a real difference.
The other match which could be a lot closer than it first looks is the final match of the night between James Wade and Vincent van der Voort. The Dutchman hasn’t really produced his best darts so far in 2011 but with his back problems now sorted out, the ‘Fastest Player In The World’ will be aiming for a good run at the Grand Prix. The 5/2 for van der Voort to progress may seem a little on the short side when looking at the world rankings but with the double start anything can happen.
The other two matches taking place this evening sees Wes Newton (3/10) take on John Henderson (3/1) and Raymond van Barneveld (2/7) face Andy Smith (3/1).
It’s very hard to see any other result apart from a Newton and Barney victory. Newton is playing some of his best darts to date and has really excelled in 2011 and Barney loves this tournament and looked as good as ever when defeating Mervyn King. If you agree with this, Boylesports are top price on the double at around 4/6.
From the darts betting markets on offer for this evening there is one market from Blue Square that really stands out and that is the total sets in the match. All the second round matches are the first to three sets and with all none of tonight’s matches being a complete walkover the over 3.5 sets on each match could appeal. If you go over on all four matches the accumulator works out at just above 7/2.
