Marquez hoping it’s a case of third time lucky

Manny Pacquiao v Juan Manuel Marquez BettingJuan Manuel Marquez will be hoping it’s a case of third time lucky when he steps into the ring to take on the Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand in the early hours of Sunday morning (UK time). After losing out to Pacquiao in 2004 and 2008 in controversial circumstances, the Mexican will be keen to settle the score but at the age of 38 it remains to be seen if Marquez still has the ability and speed to avoid the quick hands of Pacquiao.

The major issue for Marquez is the weight that the two fighters are meeting at. The 38-year-old is not use to fighting at the 144 pound mark and at his only previous attempt at welterweight, he was taught a harsh lesson by Floyd Mayweather Jr. Manny on the other hand has been fighting at this weight for the last two years and with youth on his side he should prove too strong and quick for the Mexican. Yes, Marquez troubled Pacquiao in both previous fights but they were at 126 pounds and 130 pounds so the step up in weight will be more suited to Pac-Man, who is the king of the welterweight division.

It’s hard to see any other outcome apart from a Pac-Man victory (1/9 with Coral and Bodog) but with Marquez being one of the toughest boxers around, it won’t be an easy victory. With that in mind, one boxing betting market that could still hold some value is, when will the fight end? It’s 2/1 (Ladbrokes) for either fighter to win in rounds seven to 12 and 5/4 (Stan James) that the fight ends at the 11th round or over (includes points).

If you can take anything from the build-up to this fight you may want to take notice of the comments coming from the Freddy Roach team. They are insistent that Pacquiao will aim to win by a KO especially after Marquez’s comments that he was robbed in the previous two fights. It’s 4/6 (Coral and Paddy Power) that the Filipino boxer wins via a KO, TKO or disqualification, which does look an attractive bet.

If you are a fan of Marquez and think that he still holds enough ability and speed to trouble Pacquiao, the Mexican can be backed at 7/1 to win the fight (totesport, Paddy Power and Stand James). It’s 16/1 (Stan James) that Juan Manual Marquez wins by KO, TKO or disqualification and 16/1 that he wins via a decision or technical decision.

Whatever happens at the MGM Grand, you can expect some explosive action and with the bookmakers offering betting In-Play, there should be plenty of opportunities to get involved.
