John Terry to stand down?
Despite calls for John Terry to stand down from his England captaincy duties, BetVictor make the current Chelsea player their 6/4 favourite to lead England out in their opening game of the Euro 2012 tournament. Terry is due to face charges of racial abuse on 9th July so with the proximity of the end of the Euro 2012 Championships and the start of the trail, the matter could be taken out of Terry's hands.
Liverpool's Steven Gerrard, who currently has 82 England caps, is BetVictor's 2/1 second favourite and with Wayne Rooney suspended for England’s games against both France and Sweden, Capello could call upon the experienced 31-year-old. Scott Parker, who is having an outstanding season for Tottenham, is 4/1 whilst Chelsea's Ashley Cole is 6/1.
From the other players quoted, England goalkeeper Joe Hart is 14/1, Chelsea's Frank Lampard and Manchester City's Gareth Barry are both 16/1 and former England captain Rio Ferdinand is 33/1.
BetVictor Spokesperson Charlie McCann said: "There seems to be growing concern over Terry (6/4) leading out England with the shadow of a trial over racial abuse allegations due to begin the following month. We are convinced he won't stand down but will the FA or Fabio Capello make the decision for him. Steven Gerrard (2s) looks the obvious replacement but the Liverpool skipper has not played a great deal so far this term and suitable candidates appear thin on the ground especially with Wayne Rooney suspended."
