World Cup 2010
The England football team has been seeded for the World Cup 2010 draw that takes place on Friday 4 December, giving England fans something to smile about. Many commentators had feared that England would have been left out of the top eight teams because of England’s position in the November rankings, but the seedings actually reflect rankings in October, at which point England was faring slightly better.
The approach taken to determine the seedings means that France and Portugal are not seeded. In the case of France, many Republic of Ireland fans will be celebrating that particular twist of fate, though of course it doesn’t alter the fact that the Republic of Ireland will still not play a part in the World Cup next year.
Although England’s seeded status means that it won’t have to face Brazil or Spain until after the Group stage at least, England could well go up against France if the draw happens to go that way. Sports betting fans will be hoping that the draw won’t be so cruel to England, but a match between England and France in the Group stage would certainly attract a huge audience and an intense amount of rivalry.
World Cup betting at Paddy Power is already hotting up, with Spain heading the market for the outright winner at odds of 9/2. Brazil is second favourite at 5/1 and England is third favourite at 6/1. France is currently eighth favourite in the market at 16/1. How those odds will compare with the ones on offer after the draw remains to be seen, but 6/1 for England will please many fans who believe their team can go all the way in the tournament, especially if it gets a decent draw.
The World Cup draw will be broadcast in the UK on BBC Two (and online at the BBC website) at 17:15 GMT on Friday 4 December. The draw will be hosted by Hollywood actress Charlize Theron and Fifa General Secretary Jerome Valcke.
