Djokovic 7/5 to claim the US Open title

Novak Djokovic is 7/5 with Paddy Power to claim the US Open title after he successfully progressed past Conor Niland in his first round match. The current world number one needed just 44 minutes to book his place in the second round after the Irishman was forced to retire from the match due to food poisoning. Djokovic meets Carlos Berlocq in the second round where he is 1/100 to progress (40/1 Berlocq) and 1/6 to win in straight sets.
Defending champion Rafael Nadal is the 4/1 second favourite in the US Open Men’s outright betting after his straight sets victory over Andrey Golubev in his opening match. The Spaniard, who many expected to cruise into the second round had to battle for two hours and 49 minutes to claim a 6-3, 7-6, 7-5 victory. He now faces Frenchman Nicolas Mahut in the second round and is 1/33 (VC) to progress with Mahut 20/1 (Bet365) to upset the odds.
Andy Murray is next in the men’s outright betting at 5/1 (VC). The current world number four gets his US Open campaign underway this evening against India’s Somdev Devvarman and the bookmaker fully expect a strong showing from Murray making him the 1/66 favourite to progress (25/1 Devvarman). It’s 1/7 (Betfred) for the 24-year-old to win in straight sets and if he can show the same form that saw him claim the Cincinnati Masters in August this year, Murray should be able to reward his supporters with a 3-0 victory. One market that could still represent some value is the handicap market. Devvarman is 4/5 (Bet365) to win with a handicap start of +10 games (Murray 6/4 and Draw 9/2) so would only have to hold his serve on nine occasions during the entire match for the bet to come in. If you think that Murray will start with a bang, then the 3/1 available for him to win the first set 6-3 could be worth a small punt (10/3 to win 6-2 and 4/1 6-4).
Another player that getting his US Open campaign underway this evening is the towering Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro. It’s 18/1 (Paddy Power) for Potro to win his second US Open title (won in 2009) and after missing most of last year due to a wrist injury, it will be interesting to see how the 22-year-old performs. He faces Italian Filippo Volandri in his opening match where he is top price 1/66 to progress and 2/11 to win in straight sets.
Five-time champion Roger Federer is 6/1 (VC) to add the 2011 US Open title to his long list of achievements after he beat Santiago Giraldo 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 in his opening match. The Swiss now faces Dudi Sela in his second round match and is 1/40 to successfully overcome the Israeli. It’s 3/10 (VC) for the 30-year-old (Federer) to win in straight sets and 8/11 (PP) that he wins with a handicap of 9.5 games.
