Boxer caught up in gambling row
Professional and respected British boxer David Haye has become the centre of a row over online betting. The boxer is caught up in the gambling row after ringside remarks he made after the fight, saying that his family had correctly predicted the outcome of the match, something many say is unprofessional and puts a shadow over both the boxer and the sport.
Many tuned in to watch the one-sided boxing match where contender Audley Harrison threw just one punch in the entire fight. Haye defeated Harrison in the third round; an outcome the pugilist said ringside that his family had bet on the outcome of.
The 20,000 strong crowd who had crammed into Manchester’s MEN Arena reacted with disgust at the remarks, which David Haye was quick to retract but the story has quickly fuelled speculation that fixed somehow and questions are being asked about whether this should be allowed to happen in both sport and boxing betting.
The British Boxing Board of Control have now stepped into the furore, but do say that they have accepted Haye’s U-turn on the comments. The board are expected to discuss the issue with the boxer later in the month. There is a strict regulation already covering boxers betting online and this will now need to be clarified.
The event has overshadowed what should have otherwise been the highlight of Haye’s career and the fallout is guaranteed to rumble on for a while yet, with rumours and wild stories still circling on the Internet.
