What is Totepool?
Most people that attend a horse race meeting regularly will be familiar to betting with totepool but others who only attend the races once or twice a year maybe asking themselves, what is totepool? The main purpose of totepool is to offer people an alternative way to go horse race betting (rather than betting with the fixed odds bookmakers) by betting into a pool of money which winners are paid out, very similar to the way the National Lottery works for players.
You can bet with totepool at every racecourse around the country and is also available in more than 8,500 retail outlets. In addition to this you can also bet into the pools online with the majority of major bookmakers.
There are a number of different types of bets that you can place with totepool these range from the same markets that a fixed odds bookmakers offers (but betting into a pool) to multiple race bets – please see below for a list of the different types of bets and how they work:
Single Race Bets
- totewin - pick the winner of the race
- toteplace - pick a horse to be placed
- toteeachway - win and place bet on the same horse
- toteswinger - pick 2 horses to finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd in any order
- toteexacta - pick the 1st and 2nd in the correct order
- totetrifecta - pick the 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the correct order

- totejackpot - pick the first 6 winners at the jackpot meeting
- totesuper7 - pick 5,6 or 7 winners of the selected races

You may be asking yourself as to why you should bet with totepool and there are two main reasons:-
- the chance of winning a life changing sum from a small bet, recently a lucky totepool customer won a staggering £1,445,617.17 from just a £2 stake on the totejackpot
- totepool betting can offer better value than the fixed odds equivalent, the 2011 Grand National meeting at Aintree being a good example whereby you would have shown more profit betting totepool:
Meeting stats
- A £10 totewin on all 21 meeting winners at the festival would have paid £2,663 v £2,161 SP (+£502)
- toteexacta beat CSF in 15 out of 21 races for the meeting
Grand National Day
- A £10 totewin on all 7 winners would have paid £793 v £669 SP (+£124)
- On the Saturday the toteexacta beat CSF in 4 out of 7 races
Therefore, if you are planning on placing a horse racing bet remember to check out the pools to see if you are getting the best return for your money.
